Research Study Abstract

Study On The Energy Metabolism Balance Between PA And Diet In Obesity Children

  • Presented on May 30, 2014

Purpose: To investigate reasons for obesity in city children in China from the point view of energy metabolism balance.

Methods: Fifty seven obesity (group of obesity, GOB) and overweight (group of overweight, GOV) students, averaged 9.6±0.9 years old, were selected from schools according to the BMI screening criterion for Chinese obesity and overweight students, 52 students of the same sex in healthy body weight (group of healthy body weight, GHB), aged 9.5±0.8 years old, were select randomly at the same time. Detection of height, body weight, skin fold thickness in the subjects was carried out. Percentage of body fat, waist and hip circumference were detected. GT3X plus accelerometer was employed to detect the energy expenditure of PA in a week in the subjects. Diet surveys were adopted to investigate and calculate the average intake of energy, energy nutrients.

Results: Indicators of body weight, percentage of body fat, skin fold thickness, waist and hip circumference in GOB (53.37±10.60kg, 25.1±6.0%, 26.4±5.2mm, 24.7±7.2mm, 81.3±7.7cm, 89.5±6.4cm) and GOV (44.69±5.76kg, 21.2±8.5%, 18.7±3.9mm, 16.4±5.2mm, 76.2±4.9cm, 85.1±4.7cm) students were significantly higher than those in GHB (32.46±4.74kg, 14.1±6.4%, 12.5±4.2mm, 10.2±4.0mm, 63.5±5.6cm, 75.6±5.1cm) students (P<0.01). PA detection indicated that the average energy expenditure of PA per day (PAEE) in GOB (674.81±249.43kcal) and GOV (595.45±237.22kcal) students was significantly higher than that in GHB (415.89±118.84kcal) students (P<0.05),but averaged PAEE per kilogram body weight (PAEE/day·BW),MET,averaged steps per day, percentage of time at various exercise intensity in GOB (12.41±2.65kcal/day/BW, 1.79±0.19ml/kg/min, 8940±2251.59 steps/day) and GOV (13.30±3.80 kcal/day/BW, 1.76±0.16ml/kg/min, 9114±2848.74steps/day) students were not significantly different. The average energy intake (EI) in GOB (2740.36±863.62kcal/day) and GOV (2032.77±575.95kcal/day) students was significantly higher than those in GHB (1649.87±505.89kcal/day) students (P<0.05).

Conclusion: 1.The primary cause for city elementary students’ obesity in China is a much more intake of dietary energy, and an unreasonable diet pattern. 2. Insufficient PA is also a reason that inducted obesity in city children, especially in male obesity students.
