Committed Exercisers And Exercise Deprivation: The Relation Of Biochemical Markers And Mood

Background: Habitual exerciser’s when deprived of their usual activity showed affective alterations should be this alterations to be associated with some biochemical markers.

Purpose: Verify the effects of 14 days of exercise withdrawal on mood and biochemical marker’s in habitual exerciser’s.

Methods: Participated in this study sixteen male subjects 31.87±4.27 years, peak oxygen consumption 57.00±6.30 (ml.kg.min-1) that practice run or triathlon for at least 2 years, 5 times for week. The subjects were deprived of their habitual physical exercise for 14 consecutive days and after this, submitted to exercise session on ventilatory threshold 1 intensity (VT-1) in rectangular load for sixty minutes. In the baseline, 7th, 14th days of deprivation and after the exercise session was performed measured of affective parameters(Brunel scale of Mood)and biochemical markers (β-endorphin and Anandamide. To confirm non-exercise performance, serum markers of the CK and LDH, and control of movement’s index accelerometer (actigraph) was performed. The data was analyses using repeated measures ANOVA with Duncan Test, significance level (p<0.05).

Results: The Brunel Scale showed a increased in 14th day of Tension (2.12±1.62 vs. 6.78±8.55 vs. 1.42±2.06), Depression (0.43±0.89 vs. 3.14±4.40 vs. 0.07±0.26), Confusion (0.81±1.32 vs. 2.21±2.51 vs. 1.00±2.00), Total Mood Disturbance (-1.31 ± 6.68 vs. 7.64 ± 17.13 vs. -5.14±8.55), anger in 7 and 14th day (0.62±1.25 vs. 3.85±4.81 vs. 3.57±4.16vs 0.92±2.23) and, decreased in 7 and 14th day in the vigor dimension (11.31±1.99 vs. 8.71±2.92 vs. 8.35±3.24 vs. 11.28±2.33) comparing to the baseline and after exercise condition. The biochemical markers related to exercise practice CK and DHL decreased in 14th when compared to the baseline condition (255.81±42.90 vs. 138.46±18.51) (170.18±41.84 vs. 148.06±8.00), the markers, β-endorphin and Anandamide showed a decreased comparing the 7 and 14th day of deprivation with after exercise condition (0.14±0.02 vs. 0.13±0.02 vs. 0.17±0.04)(0.07±0.06 vs. 0.06±0.06 vs. 0.10±0.08).

Conclusion: 14 days of exercise deprivation for commitment exercisers seems to be enough to cause changes in affective parameters as well as the biochemical markers related to pleasure and well-being.
